It is a known fact that Samsung’s advertising style seems to be of bashing its competitors be that through its ads or via social media. What you probably didn’t know, and wouldn’t of known if it wasn’t for an official Federal Trade Commission (FTC) investigation, is that Samsung actually outsourced writers (usually students) and had employees who’s main job was to… put it bluntly… talk trash competitors.

FTC Fines Samsung $340,000 For Faking Web Comments

Samsung actually had a division dedicated to bashing Apple on websites leaving anonymous comments.

The issue actually arose internationally in April when Samsung admitted to faking according to The Verge, which is when the FTC began its investigation. Samsung said that it was an ““unfortunate incident” which only occurred “due to insufficient understanding”.

Despite that Samsung has said it had ““ceased all marketing activities that involve the posting of anonymous comments,” the FTC still went ahead and slapped the Korean company with a $340,000 fine.

Right now the only company that came to light in which Samsung bashed was HTC. The Associated Press reported that Samsung was found guilty on organizing “an Internet campaign in violation of fair trade rules to praise Samsung smartphones while slamming those of HTC.” This involved “disinfection of negative news about Samsung products,” “palindromic Samsung product marketing,” and more.

At this point in time there is no concrete evidence that Samsung utilized this marketing tactic against any other competitor such as Apple, but if it targeted HTC I would bet my money they went after more than just the smallest fish in the pond. I find it kind of funny the amount of comments purely bashing Apple has gone down recently on this blog.

Don’t forget Samsung was also found to be faking benchmark tests.
