We already covered 28 features of iOS 7 that you likely didn’t know about, but one feature in particular that we didn’t go into detail on was Wi-Fi Hotspot 2.0. This was simply because we lacked the proper information regarding just what this meant, besides obviously being an improvement over version 1.0.

Thanks to an explanation by Arstechnica, however we now know the juicy details on what Wi-Fi Hotspot 2.0 brings about. In essence, Wi-Fi Hotspot 2.0 is an initiative to allow your device to jump from Wi-Fi networks just like a cellular device hopes from cell phone towers automatically. The technology developed by Wi-Fi Alliance is explained in more detail below:

Hotspot 2.0 is the technology specification behind the Wi-Fi Alliance’s Passpoint certification program. As we wrote last year, the goal of Passpoint is to create a Wi-Fi extension of cellular networks, making it easier for service providers to offload traffic and give users faster Internet connections. Instead of typing in a password, a user could authenticate to the network automatically by virtue of owning a device with a SIM card. Passpoint-enabled devices within range of a Passpoint-supporting hotspot would automatically join it and get the benefit of WPA2 security.

Although this all sounds wonderful, in reality we aren’t yet at the point where it is necessarily that useful because in order for Wi-Fi Hotspot 2.0 to be of use there needs to be a large network of hotspots. A Wi-Fi Alliance spokesperson did have some good news though:

30 operators are conducting Passpoint trials and that we can expect deployments later this year. Hotspot 2.0 was developed in part by companies like AT&T, Boingo, CableVision, Comcast, TimeWarner, and China Mobile, which are among the firms conducting the trials.

The premise behind Hotspot 2.0 and Wi-Fi Alliance’s Passpoint certification program is certainly exciting and it is yet another great feature that Apple has implemented into iOS 7.
