Mystery Golden Samsung Smartphone Appears On Video
A mystery phone resembling Samsung’s Galaxy S5 has emerged on video
A pair of videos have leaked showing a mystery Samsung handset. At first it was thought the device could be the rumoured Galaxy S5 Prime or Galaxy S5 Active, but on closer inspection it appears it’s unlikely to be either.
The author of the videos, TKTech, states in the first video that they do not know precisely what model the handset is and speculates that it could be the S5 Active or S5 Prime. The only visible branding is the Samsung logo on the front. Allegedly it has an aluminium back panel, but also sports a thick rubber seal around the outer edge. The phone also seems slightly larger than the regular Galaxy S5. Feasibly, however, it could simply be a custom back panel built for the regular Galaxy S5.
It’s running Android KitKat with the Google Now launcher pre-loaded. So, no chance this is one of the Windows Phone handsets Samsung is rumoured to be working on.
The second video emerged later showing the model number SM-G906, but also a 1080p screen resolution – lower than the repeatedly rumoured 2K QHD pegged for the Galaxy S5 Prime, although interestingly it seems the pixel density is 480 pixels-per-inch, which at that resolution would suggest the screen is smaller than 5-inches. The processor onboard is also the Snapdragon 800, while rumours for the Galaxy S5 Active and S5 Prime suggest Snapdragon 801 and Snapdragon 805 chips respectively.
Additionally, we’ve already seen leaked images allegedly of the Galaxy S5 Prime featuring the same dimpled back panel design (albeit a metal one) as the regular S5, while this phone features a smooth finish.
A possible explanation? Well, it could be a Galaxy S5 Mini, but that only makes sense with regard to the processor, resolution and screen size. The metal build and the potential enhanced waterproofing (implied by the rubber seal and expanded chassis bulk) are not so in-keeping with Samsung’s usual Galaxy Mini MO, but then again neither is a high-end processor – that could be simply a response to the positive reception of Sony’s premium spec Xperia Z1 Compact.
Along those lines, improving the waterproofing and adding a metal body could also be similar moves to please consumers through following current trends, after Samsung’s regular Galaxy S5 was widely criticised for not being different enough and not offering enough of a premium finish. That criticism has led to the company’s mobile design chief being re-assigned internally, so shockwaves are certainly being felt – but with all that said, Galaxy S5 handsets are still selling like hotcakes, with the device reaching Samsung’s 10 million sold threshold in record time.
