Gmail For Android Has Been Downloaded One Billion Times
The first application to reach a billion downloads goes to Google’s mail application
Back in September 2013 Google announced its billionth Android activation. Shipment numbers since then have gone up even further but we don’t have any exact figures just yet.
Once a billion devices were active it was only a matter of time before one of the applications hit that big milestone as well. It turns out the first to reach it is Gmail.
Gmail isn’t the most used application on the Android platform, that title goes to Facebook with the most active users, but it’s still hit the top number for downloads first. Google Search and YouTube have even proved more popular in terms of active users but Gmail has pipped them to the top download post.
It’s likely down to the fact Gmail is packaged in with a lot of Android products. Gmail doesn’t even have a billion monthly active users so it’s not from downloading it indivually.
According to the Google Play store it’s now in the one billion to five billion range so it’s unlikely to reach that next milestone very soon. The question is: which application will reach the title to become the second app over the billion mark?
Google Search, YouTube, Facebook, Google Maps and WhatsApp are all in the five hundred million to one billion range and could make the jump over soon. We’d think it’d be one of the Google applications as they also come packaged with Android devices and we shouldn’t underestimate the power of Facebook.
Facebook announced recently that it has 609 million active daily users across all its platforms. That’s a formidable number for daily users, it could reach a billion downloads before we know it.
