Remember when IDC published a press release back in April saying smartphones outsold feature phones for the first time ever in Q1 2013? Gartner didn’t actually believe that actually happened. If you look at the second quarter, however, then they changed their minds.

Who is on top? Samsung, of course, with 71 million units shipped, giving them a hair over 31% of the market. In next place is Apple, with slightly over 14% of the market. Players three to five (LG, Lenovo, ZTE) each sold around 10 million units, giving them roughly 5% of the market a pop. And “others”, the companies that are either emerging (Coolpad) or were once relevant (Motorola, BlackBerry, Nokia), eats up a staggering 40% of the market.

Should any of this be of surprise to you? Not really. It wasn’t that long ago when a decent feature phone cost upwards of $150 to even $200. Smartphones not fit in that price category. And as smartphones become cheaper and cheaper, pretty soon feature phones will die out. There’s still a place in this world for dumb phones that only call and text and last more than two weeks on a single charge, but it’s rapidly shrinking.
