Call of Duty: Black Ops Breaks Sales Record! Fastest Selling Game Ever!

If you thought $200,000 earnings on first day were big, get this: Call of Duty Black Ops has made a mind-blowing $360 million in retail sales in its first 24 hours in US and UK alone.

Activision announced this today in a press release where they pointed out that Black Ops is " the biggest entertainment launch in history”:

Shattering its own day-one sales record, Activision Publishing, Inc.  (Nasdaq: ATVI) announced that Treyarch’s highly-anticipated Call of Duty®: Black Opshas become the biggest entertainment launch ever with an estimated sell-through of approximately $360 million in North America and the United Kingdom alone in the first 24 hours of its release, as compared to last year’s estimated day-one sell-through of $310 million for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare® 2 in North America and the United Kingdom, according to internal Activision estimates.

A total 7 million units were estimatedly sold: 59% of total copies were sold on Xbox 360 whereas 36% and the reset were sold on PS3 and other platforms respectively.

Black Ops has shot every previous entertainment launch record in the head with its first 24 hour sales. This includes the franchise’s own previous record of Modern Warfare 2 which was anot-so-shabby $310m; it also beats Avatar’s first day sales.

Granted, we’re comparing Avatar (a $10 per ticket film), Halo: Reach (an X360 exclusive title) with a multiplatform super-hyped video game, but the point is: Activision is making millions upon millions upon millions of dollars by the continual milking of a shooter franchise.

It’s a successful formula after all. Intense audiovisual presentation fused with excellent gameplay – both online and off – has continued to enthrall the audience and will do so for ages to come.

So, did you buy Black Ops too? [via VGChartz]
