Android 4.4 KitKat to bring re-designed icons and stock apps?

The folks over at 9to5Google have got their hands on some leaked screenshots of Android 4.4 KitKat running on a Nexus 4, showing off the updated UI of the stock apps.

Not much is known about the next version of Android, except that it will be called Android 4.4 KitKat. These leaked images might just give us an idea of what Google’s upcoming update is going to include. The leaked images show the new Messaging and Dialer app, which have a slightly updated UI and a new palette of colors.

A point to note in the above screenshots is that the status bar changes colors according to the application opened. This feature, if the above screenshots are true, can already be found in Paranoid Android custom ROM. There are two other screenshots as well – one of the About Phone screen and the other one of the home screen.

The About Phone screen does not give much information except for an August 30th build date. However, the kernel version remains at 3.4.0, which does not sound right. The home screen image shows off the icons, that have a new flatter look along with the transparent navigation bar.

At this point, it is tough to say whether these images are real or fake. It is very unlikely that Google will not update the kernel version to 3.6 (or 3.8) with a new update. However, the flatter icons make sense since Google is rolling out its new logo with a similar look across its services and product pages.

Hopefully, we should have more information and leaks about what the next version of Android will include as we approach the rumored announcement date (October 14) from Google.
