Although iOS is technically at the top of the food chain when it comes to mobile security, there is actually a lot of security flaws that have been discovered over the last few months that is damaging the mobile operating systems reputation.

Today, for example, the researchers at the University of Erlangen in Germany have found a flaw that allows hackers to break the security on Apple’s personal hotspot functionality in under a minute. If you have ever used the person hotspot feature on your iOS Device, which I am going to guess you have, then you are probably aware you are able to set the hotspot’s password or use an automatically created one.

Hackers Able To Crack iOS Personal Hotspot Password In Under 1 Minute

Three researchers have figured out that if you opt-in to this automatically created one, the passwords that are generated are very unsecure. Using a list with 52,500 entries that originated from an open-source Scrabble crossword game, the researchers were able to crack the iOS hotspot password at a 100 percent success rate.

The initial attempt to crack the password took 49 minutes because they tried all 52,500 entries, but it was later discovered that ”only 1,842 different entries of that dictionary are taken into consideration. Consequently, any default password used within an arbitrary iOS mobile hotspot is based on one of these 1,842 different words.”

With this in mind they used some cracking hardware — a GPU cluster consisting of four AMD Radeon HD 7970s — and were able to hack any iOS hotspot with an OS-generated password in 50 seconds flat.

Technically this hardware is out of reach from most users, but the researchers said that similar resources are easily available through today’s cloud computing technologies. If anything this discovery is a good warning to those who use iOS’ personal hotspot feature frequently that you should be making your own secure password not relying on the OS-generated one.
