Big phones are a thing. All it takes is a five minute walk through any of the world’s major cities to see that people are embracing devices like Samsung’s Galaxy Note. You’ll typically see Asian women being cited as the target market for these so-called phablets, and after spending the first three months back packing through Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and a handful of other places, I can confirm that that’s indeed the case. Now we’ve already seen LG launch a jumbo phone, and so have many Chinese players, but what about Motorola?

Google bought Motorola with the hope that they’d turn the company around. The Moto X, which I had a chance to play with a week ago, is an outstanding device. So much so that I’m furious it’s not sold abroad. The rumored DVX will be popular too, but it’s just a cheap Moto X. What about a device for those Asian markets where big phones are really a thing? According to the Weibo user Houdabao, which G4Games says has proven to be a reliable source in the past, Motorola is hard at work on a 6.3 inch smartphone called the Xplay.

Before you throw your arms up in the air and call this stupid, I’d like to remind you that I spent a month with the Galaxy Mega 6.3 in my pocket, and I loved it. If marketed correctly, and if the bezels are small enough, people will buy this alleged phablet. I’m absolutely sure of it. I wish the company would go just a tiny bit smaller, like 6.1 inches, but I know that I can handle 6.3 inches without too much discomfort.
