How To Filter Out Explicit YouTube Content On Mobile
Restricted content on YouTube can be really irritating, here’s how to block it out in YouTube’s search results
As anyone can upload videos to YouTube, it makes for a real diversity of video selections whatever you search for. Most of the time it’s fine, but there’s a lot of content that you may not want to see and you certainly wouldn’t want your children to see. Fortunately, YouTube has filters that you can turn on that makes anything with an explicit content warning disappear from your search results. Pretty much all of Eminem’s back catalogue will just disappear before your eyes; you can make up your mind whether that’s a good or bad thing.
How to filter the Android YouTube App
Open up the official Android YouTube app. On the top right you’ll see the menu button that looks like three dots in a vertical line, open it up and tap the Cog icon to head into the Settings menu. You’ll see the main settings menu with options for General, Connected TVs and Captions, amongst others. Tap the Search option and it’ll take you into another menu. Inside there tap Safe Search Filtering, which will open a pop-up window asking you to select either “Don’t Filter” or “Strict”. You’ve guessed it, choose “Strict” and you wont see any restricted content in your news feed again.
If you ever want to access the restricted content again you can just reverse the process; head in and choose “Don’t Filter” this time around and all content will turn up in your searches.
How to filter the iOS YouTube App
It’s pretty much the same process on the iOS YouTube App, as it is for Android, you just need to press a few different buttons in different places. Head into your YouTube app and press the button in the top left that looks like three horizontal lines. Once you’re in there you can then press the cog on the top right that will send you into the Settings menu.
The top option inside the Settings is Safe Search Filtering and select “Strict”. If you ever want to switch it back and see restricted content again just head back in and choose “Don’t Filter”.
