Last week Damien argued that 2015/16 could well be the year Android Wear gazumps the Apple Watch. How this could happen, according to Mr. MacFerren, is similar to what happened in the phone space: Android Wear, like Android, offers punters more choice and more cost-effective options and this, could, theoretically lead to Android Wear becoming more widely used in the smartwatch space than Apple’s proposition, just as we saw in the phone markets between 2007 and present day.
Apple has kind of nailed the premium angle with its smartwatch, but a new Android Wear watch could seriously change all that as one of the biggest names in timepieces prepares to join the fray. I’m talking about Tag Heuer, a company that needs no introduction. Tag Heuer has confirmed it will be launching an Android Wear watch on November 9, just in time for Christmas.
Not much is known about the watch thus far, though Tag has a website up and running with a countdown timer running. The event, scheduled for November 9, will take place in New York and represents the first time we’ve seen a premium, traditional watch-maker enter the wearables space.
This is EXACTLY the type of exposure Android Wear needs. It is also something Apple cannot even compete with — it doesn’t lease out its software to third parties.
There’s no word on price, features or when the watch will be available. But being a Tag it’ll probably be quite pricy! Let’s hope the company has something new to bring to the table as well, like 48 hour battery performance or something.
Exciting times!
