Samsung’s folding and flexible OLED phone has been certified
We know Samsung is already hard at work on the Galaxy S9, which will likely drop during Q1 2018 (possibly early Q2, though) – but the really BIG products from Samsung next year are going to be the ones which leverage its folding and flexible (Super) AMOLED display technology for the first time ever – we’ve taken to calling the screens FFOLED for short. At present this is belived to include the Galaxy Note 9, but also an entirely new device dubbed the Galaxy X, which according to new information has been granted official certification in Samsung’s home nation of South Korea.
The device has already been granted Wi-Fi and Bluetooth certifications from the respective bodies for those connection protocols, so we knew it was on the way, however, a previously projected Q3 2017 launch has obviously not occured.
The certification documents mention a device number previously associated with the Galaxy X handset – SM-G888N0. The “N0” apparently means it is the Korean-facing edition specifically, but it’s believed there will be other versions for different regions.
Previously unearthed patent drawings show the Galaxy X design with a huge and wide touch display which folds out from a clamshell design. It appears it would be a bigger screen than even the Galaxy S8 18.5:9 wide aspect ratio “Infinity Display”.
But more broadly the introduction of this new device category is exciting as it has the potential to completely revolutionise the smartphone market. No longer will users need to choose between a smartphone and a tablet, lug around multiple devices, or have an extra large smartphone to get a big display. The FFOLED technology, which Samsung has been working on for at least five years now, opens up a world of possiblities for transforming device form factors; consumers will no longer be restricted to the same old slab from one device to the next.
Naturally the Galaxy X, and likewise the Galaxy Note 9, will be something of a testbed – a proof of concept, almost – with the really clever and crazy stuff coming later. Still, it’s expected these will be full flagship-grade devices packed with high end tech. The FFOLED screens still leverage all the best qualities of Samsung’s impressive Super AMOLED displays, and we believe the Galaxy X will use next-gen high-end CPUs from Qualcomm and Samsung’s own Exynos brand.
