OnePlus Is NOT Considering A Windows Phone Version
After a miscommunication some believed OnePlus were working on a Windows Phone version of the OnePlus One
OnePlus is prepping to release its One (and only) handset in one of the worlds biggest markets. By the end of December the OnePlus One will be avalaible in India and according to the company it’ll be ditching the invite scheme for a more traditional pre-order scheme by then too.
To celebrate, Carl Pei, OnePlus’ Global Director spoke to The Economic Times and revealed the handset would be available for around $325 in the country although nothing is set in stone.
During the interview a misunderstanding meant The Economic Times reported OnePlus is looking to build a Windows Phone smartphone. The website revealed it wasn’t clear whether Pei meant it would be a Windows Phone version of the OnePlus One or an entirely new handset altogether.
Since the interview Carl Pei has spoken to The Economic Times again and clarified he was misunderstood. A spokesperson for OnePlus said, “Carl Pei was speaking to the fact that we are open to choice for our users and had even at one point spoken with Microsoft about perhaps having Windows as a choice for install on the One. We have no plans to make a Windows phone.”
That last part makes it pretty clear OnePlus doesn’t want to get involved in the Windows Phone space, at least not any time soon.
The interview did also reveal a couple more interesting things, especially regarding the OS we’ll see on future OnePlus handsets.
Pei revealed there is an in-house OS development team at OnePlus that is working on some improvements. He also suggested the team are working on a heavily skinned version of Android and the company may do away with CyanogenMod for the OnePlus Two.
On the subject of the India release, Pei revealed to kick things off the 64GB handset will be available with the 16GB version following up later, potentially in 2015. OnePlus is also opening an office in India in order to cope with customer service issues in the country.
