Apple’s flagships face off! We take a look at how the iPhone 8 compares to the iPhone X
Apple unveiled not one but TWO new flagship phones this year: the iPhone 8 and the all-new iPhone X. Like the iPhone 7 before it, the iPhone 8 looks relatively similar. It features the same body, albeit with glass paneling, and still has the wide bezels and Touch ID. The iPhone X, on the other hand, has an all-new, fresh design with an edge-to-edge display. Furthermore, it completely eliminated the Home button in favor for virtual Home gestures. And let’s not forget the iPhone X also has the controversial Face ID biometric authentication system. But there’s a ton of other differences between Apple’s two flagships as well. Let’s take a closer look to see how they compare.
iPhone X vs iPhone 8: Specs
Here’s the specs for the iPhone X:
- Display: 5.8-inch display with a 2436 x 1125-pixel resolution at 458 ppi
- Dimensions: 143.6mm x 70.9mm x 7.7mm
- Weight: 174 grams
- Storage: 64 or 256GB
- Processors: A11 Bionic chip
- Front camera: 7 MP photos and 1080p HD video
- Rear camera: 12MP wide-angle and telephoto cameras, Dual optical image stabilisation, Optical zoom
- Battery: 2716 mAh. Up to 12 hours battery life mixed usage
- Other: Face ID, NFC, Wireless charging, 3D Touch; Splash, Water and Dust Resistant
- Color options: Silver and Space Gray
And here’s the specs for the iPhone 8:
- Display: 4.7-inch display with a 1334×750-pixel resolution at 326ppi
- Dimensions: 138.4mm x 67.3mm x 7.3mm
- Weight: 148 grams
- Storage: 64 or 256GB
- Processors: A11 Bionic chip
- Front camera: 7 MP photos and 1080p HD video
- Rear camera: 12MP camera, Optical image stabilisation
- Battery: 1821 mAh. Up to 12 hours battery life mixed usage
- Other: Touch ID, NFC, Wireless charging, 3D Touch; Splash, Water and Dust Resistant
- Color options: Silver, Gold and Space Gray
As far as the internal specs go, the iPhone X and the iPhone 8 are pretty similar. Both have the A11 Bionic chip (which is 70% faster than the A10 Fusion). Both also have the same storage options: 64GB or 256GB.
iPhone X vs iPhone 8: Display & Design
Of course, the differences become really apparent when you talk about display and design. The iPhone X’s design is virtually all display. Its beautiful 5.5in screen is packed into a physical size making the phone not that much larger than the iPhone 8. The resolution of the iPhone X’s screen is a massive 2436 x 1125-pixels at 458 ppi. Compare that to the iPhone 8’s 4.7in display with a relatively diminutive 1334×750-pixel resolution at 326ppi–and of course, that’s not an edge-to-edge display like the iPhone X has. As far as displays and design goes, the iPhone X handily beats the iPhone 8.
The other big difference in design is that since the iPhone X features an all-display front, it lacks the Home button, and thus Touch ID. Instead, iPhone X has a new biometric authentication feature called Face ID. It scans your face to unlock you phone. Since the iPhone X isn’t out yet, we can’t say for sure if Face ID is better or more useful than the iPhone 8’s Touch ID. However, if you are a fan of Touch ID, know that you won’t be getting that on the iPhone X.
iPhone X vs iPhone 8: Battery
The iPhone X has a much larger battery (2716 mAh) than the iPhone 8 (1821 mAh). Part of the reason it’s so much larger is that it has to power that massive, higher resolution display. Unfortunately, because the iPhone X display takes up so much of the extra juice, the iPhone X doesn’t see any massive improvements in battery life in most cases. Here’s how the battery life compares between the two in Talk Time, Standby Time, Internet Use, Video Playback, and Audio Playback:
- Talk time: iPhone X – 21 hours. iPhone 8 – 14 hours.
- Internet use: iPhone X – Up to 12 hours. iPhone 8 – Up to 12 hours.
- Video playback: iPhone X – Up to 13 hours. iPhone 8 – Up to 13 hours.
- Audio playback: iPhone X – Up to 60 hours. iPhone 8 – Up to 40 hours.
iPhone X vs iPhone 8: Camera
Both the iPhone X and iPhone 8 have the same megapixels in the front and rear cameras, however, the rear camera in the iPhone X destroys the one found in the iPhone 8. That’s because it’s a dual lens system including wide-angle and telephoto cameras. The rear camera in the iPhone X also sports dual optical image stabilisation and optical zoom. You do get optical image stabilization on the iPhone 8, but its only single, since the iPhone 8 is only a single lens camera. But make no mistake about it: if you want the best smartphone camera on the market, opt for the iPhone X over the iPhone 8.
iPhone X vs iPhone 8: Cost & Verdict
And then there is the cost. Unlocked the 4.7-inch iPhone 8 will cost £699 (64GB) and £849 (256GB). The iPhone X will cost £999 (64GB) and £1149 (256GB). That £300 premium for the iPhone 8 does get you a heck of alot more: a bigger, more beautiful display, a better camera, more storage, and a jaw-dropping fresh, new design.
