They’re very different in some ways, exactly the same in others.
Apple now sells TWO types of Phones with giant screens. There’s the tried and true “Plus” series of iPhones with their 5.5in display and then there the new iPhone X with its massive 5.8in display. These two devices will be the hottest of the holiday period and from just a quick read of the screen specs, you might assume they are very similar. However, that’s only true in part. While they both have large displays and some of the same internals, the physical differences between the devices are striking. So how do they compare? We took a look at the iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus to find out.
iPhone X vs iPhone 8 Plus: Specs
Here’s the specs for the iPhone X:
- Display: 5.8in display with a 2436 x 1125-pixel resolution at 458 ppi
- Dimensions: 143.6mm x 70.9mm x 7.7mm
- Weight: 174 grams
- Storage: 64 or 256GB
- Memory: 3 GB RAM
- Processors: A11 Bionic chip
- Front camera: 7 MP photos and 1080p HD video
- Rear camera: 12MP wide-angle and telephoto cameras, Dual optical image stabilisation, Optical zoom
- Battery: 2716 mAh, Wireless charging
- Other: Face ID, NFC, 3D Touch; Splash, Water and Dust Resistant
And here’s the specs for the iPhone 8 Plus:
- Display: 5.5in Retina HD display with 1920×1080 resolution at 401ppi, 3D Touch enabled
- Dimensions: 158.4mm x 78.1 mm x 7.5 mm
- Weight: 202 grams
- Storage: 64 or 256GB
- Memory: 3 GB RAM
- Processors: A11 Bionic chip
- Front camera: 7 MP photos and 1080p HD video
- Rear camera: 12MP wide-angle and telephoto cameras, Dual optical image stabilisation, Optical zoom
- Battery: 2675 mAh, Wireless charging
- Other: Touch ID, NFC, 3D Touch; Splash, Water and Dust Resistant
It’s no surprise, but the iPhone X and the iPhone 8 Plus have pretty much the same specs packed inside. They both feature Apple’s latest A11 Bionic chipset as well as 3GB of RAM. Both also have the same storage options: 64GB or 256GB.
iPhone X vs iPhone 8 Plus: Display & Design
Where the difference between these two giant phones lie is in their display and design. The resolution of the iPhone X’s screen is a massive 2436 x 1125-pixels at 458 ppi edge-to-edge. Compare that to the iPhone 8 Plus’ 5.5in display with a 1920×1080-pixel resolution at 401ppi–and of course, that’s not an edge-to-edge display like the iPhone X has. What’s even more impressive is that though the iPhone X has a larger display, the devices actually has a smaller physical footprint than the iPhone 8 Plus. Why that is, of course, is because the iPhone X has the edge-to-edge display, while the iPhone 8 Plus still has its thick bezels.
The other obvious difference is that the iPhone X lacks a Home button. It jettisons it in favor of a gesture-based Home control. The iPhone 8 Plus still has the Home button we all know and love. This means the iPhone 8 Plus also still has Touch ID. The iPhone X lacks Touch ID and replaces it with Apple’s new Face ID facial recognition system.
The rest of the features of each phone’s display and design are relatively the same: both have 3D Touch displays and both are Splash, Water and Dust Resistant.
iPhone X vs iPhone 8 Plus: Battery
The iPhone X has just a slightly larger battery (2716 mAh) than the iPhone 8 Plus (2675 mAh). Will you see any difference because of it? Probably not. Matter of fact, as you can see from the battery life specs below, each device is very similar. Another similarity each devices has is that they both offer wireless charging. Here’s how the battery life compares between the two in Talk Time, Standby Time, Internet Use, Video Playback, and Audio Playback:
- Talk time: iPhone X – 21 hours. iPhone 8 Plus – 21 hours.
- Internet use: iPhone X – Up to 12 hours. iPhone 8 Plus – Up to 13 hours.
- Video playback: iPhone X – Up to 13 hours. iPhone 8 Plus – Up to 14 hours.
- Audio playback: iPhone X – Up to 60 hours. iPhone 8 Plus – Up to 60 hours.
iPhone X vs iPhone 8 Plus: Camera
Where cameras are concerned, the iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus are nearly identical. Both feature a 12MP wide-angle and telephoto dual lens rear camera that offers dual optical image stabilisation and optical zoom. Both also feature the same front camera, a 7 MP sensor that also records 1080p HD video. However, the iPhone X’s front camera has a few more tricks. It can use Apple’s new Portrait mode, Portrait Lighting (beta), and Animoji features of iOS 11. The iPhone 8 Plus’s camera doesn’t have access to those.
iPhone X vs iPhone 8 Plus: Cost & Verdict
Unlocked the 5.5in iPhone 8 Plus will cost £799 (64GB) and £949 (256GB). The 5.8in iPhone X will cost £999 (64GB) and £1149 (256GB). That £200 premium for the iPhone X does get you a little more, primarily a bigger display and a sexy new design. If that appeals to you, the answer of which to buy is clear.
