GTA 6: How Can Rockstar Improve On Near Perfection?
GTA 5 was one of the biggest selling games of all time. So, how the hell do you build on that?
Rockstar’s GTA series needs zero introductions. The game has always been controversial, even during its early years, and has, since then, gone on to become one of the biggest grossing titles of all time. Each new instalment has built on the last, adding in bigger worlds, new gameplay modes and improved graphics.
GTA 5 sold in INSANE numbers, generating $800 million in its first day and $1 billion in its first three days on sale for Rockstar. But this was to be expected: the hype surrounding the first game was monumental after extremely positive previews at E3 and gamer expos around the globe.
GTA V took a different approach to its story mode, adding three central characters to the mix. The missions and heists were exceptional, boasting some of the best in-game cinematography ever committed to code. Like Tool or King Crimson or Yes, nothing else really compares to GTA –– it is in a league of its own.
But now that GTA 5 is out in the wild, talk has turned to what Rockstar will for its next instalment of the series, GTA 6. Where will it take the franchise from here? How will it develop the story modes? How will the graphics be improved? And, most importantly, will we finally get a female lead in the game?
Here’s everything currently known about Rockstar’s plans for GTA 6:
GTA 6 Release Date
Because building a game the size of GTA takes time, the update to GTA V, sadly, won’t be with us for a good long while –– we’re looking at 2018 at the very earliest for a new instalment of the series. Having said that, there could be a few mini-series updates in between, such as GTA City Stories, in order to keep Rockstar’s coffers lined and further develop the events started in GTA 5.
Work on GTA 6 is almost certainly underway, however, as these things take A LOT of time. How far along Rockstar is with development remains to be seen, but knowing how technology company works the game giant likely had much of the story and concept for GTA 6 in the bag before it even released GTA 5.
GTA 6: New Features, Characters & Wishlist
There’s an absolute mountain of speculation and wishes surrounding GTA 6. Online and inside forums, millions of people have posted their wishes and suggestions for where Rockstar should take the next instalment.
Below is everything currently rumoured or known about GTA 6’s new features, characters and changes.
GTA 6: Time For A Female Lead
To date, GTA has been very light on lead female characters. And this is peeved off a lot of people. Girls have featured in the game, but usually as an after thought –– never in a central role.
GTA 6, therefore, has the ability to right this wrong and introduce a strong female lead. Rockstar will undoubtably do this in the next instalment; it’s bad PR to viewed as sexist and having a female lead would introduce a much needed new dynamic to the story.
Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games, said that there is possibility for a female character in a GTA game: “In the future, could we do a game with a lead female character? Of course. We just haven’t found the right game for it yet, but it’s one of the things we always think about.”
GTA 6: A Brand New City
Los Santos is based on LA. But now that’s been done it stands to reason Rockstar will use a new location for the next instalment of GTA. What the location is remains to be seen, though we’d love to see a place like Chicago used. Not only is the city gorgeous, but it also has tons of unique features and loads of bridges, which are great for blowing up.
“More exotic locations would be nice to see,” reports Games Bolt, “but even the more mundane examples will work as well. It’s not like locations need to be made up completely out of the blue either. There are some wonderfully vibrant and lively cities around the planet. There’s no real reason we should necessarily be stuck in the United States, which is where the overwhelming majority of the GTA titles have taken place. In fact the only GTA game that has taken place outside of the U.S. was Grand Theft Auto: London, a game that was released way back on the original PlayStation.”
GTA 6: Ryan Gosling To Feature?
In a recent interview, Rockstar’s Leslie Benzie discussed some details about the company’s next instalment of GTA. According to Benzie, Rockstar has A LOT of ideas and, awesomely, plans on using them all inside GTA 6.
“We’ve got about 45 years worth of ideas we want to do,” he said during a recent interview. “We don’t know what ‘GTA 6’ will be, but we’ve got some ideas.”
“It comes from the idea first,” he said. “Where is it going to be set is the first question. Then that defines the missions; you’re doing different things in L.A. than in New York or Miami. The map and story get worked up together, and the story is a basic flow of how it works out so you can layer the missions in.”
In addition to this, Ryan Gosling has been linked to the next instalment of GTA. According to reports, The Gos may be taking on the role of one of the main characters –– a move no doubt inspired by his performance in Drive.
