iPhone 8 Said to Feature ‘Function Area’ Below 5.15-Inch OLED Display
As has been previously rumored, Kuo says the display will take up the entire front of the phone, meaning no bezels or physical Home button. This also means that although the handset will have a display roughly the size of the current iPhone 7 Plus, its body may not be much bigger than the 4.7-inch iPhone 7.
As for the Function Area itself, Kuo believes that it could work similar to the Touch Bar in the new MacBook Pro models, with virtual buttons being the main element of the area, but that it could be used for other actions as well. Additionally, Kuo says that the Function Area will indeed be replacing the Touch ID functionality of the upcoming device.
The Home button will be gone entirely, with Kuo adding that Apple will replace this feature with other biometric security technologies, but does not go into detail in what that could mean. It has been rumored that Apple will implement facial recognition software and features into the iPhone 8, so this report could be leaning into that rumor.
Other new features rumored for Apple’s new handset include wireless charging, a glass body framed by stainless steel, better battery life and some sort of augmented reality feature. It’s believed, and Kuo reiterates this in today’s note, that these enhancements will push the iPhone’s full retail price tag beyond $1,000.
