iPhone 7 to Be Called iPhone 6SE?
If true, this would be the first time that Apple would be changing its naming scheme after the introduction of the iPhone 4S in 2011. The naming scheme, however, makes sense in my opinion because the upcoming iPhones simply don’t seem to pack enough visual upgrades that would justify calling them the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Apple has always used a change in the numbering scheme with a design revamp, but the upcoming iPhones are going to sport a design similar to the iPhone 6/6s, though with added enhancements like being water-resistant and featuring a cleaner back.
Other changes that will be a part of the new iPhones that Apple would be announcing in September this year include improved camera performance, battery life, faster performance, and stereo speakers. All of these changes combined will lead to a huge usability improvement compared to the iPhone 6s, but are likely not big enough to warrant the ‘iPhone 7’ moniker.
I don’t believe the next iPhone will be called ‘iPhone 6SE’ because the name could confuse would-be shoppers as it implies an iterative refresh to the iPhone SE rather than a brand new iPhone model, but who knows…
