Google Assistant May Arrive on the iPhone Some Day Beyond Allo
Keeping true to its promise, the Mountain View firm just started rolling out Assistant to smartphones running Android 7.0 Nougat and Android 6.0 Marshmallow versions.
Of course, people would like to know if Assistant will end up on other devices, namely ones that aren’t directly released by Google. At this year’s Mobile World Congress, Google’s Product Management Director, Gummi Hafsteinsson, was asked just that question (via Geekster). Would Assistant be making its presence known on devices like the iPhone in the future?
The answer is, as one can expect, remarkably noncommittal, saying only that, yes, Google would like Assistant on as many devices as possible. That could mean the iPhone one day, technically.
“I don’t think we have anything to announce at this point,” Hafsteinsson told Geekster. “But I think the general philosophy is that we would like to have the Assistant available to as many people as possible.”
It’s worth noting that Google Assistant is already available on iPhones, thanks to the fact that Google Allo is available on iPhones. It’s a messaging platform that Google launched last year, and it has Assistant baked right into it. So, it’s not as easily accessible as, say, Siri, but considering we’re talking about the iPhone here, that’s probably not ever going to be a reality anyway.
Google has said that the feature will automatically come to eligible Android phones running Nougat and Marshmallow with Google Play Services via a software update.
